<image:caption>Multiscale Reconstruction of Mouse Cerebral Cortex. Panel A shows the various layers of cortical tissue imaged overall. Panels B and C show manual and automated segmentations of everything within a single section in the area reconstructed at highest resolution. Panel D shows a 3D rendering of the cell bodies and apical dendrites of two pyramidal neurons highlighted in the analysis—created by stacking together many single section images of the type shown in B and C. The multicolor cylinder near the pink arrow in D marks the small pieces of dendrite around which the highest resolution reconstruction was performed. (Note that the arrows in D correspond to the arrows in A, illustrating the ‘zoom-in’ to layer 5 of cortex.) Panel E shows a closeup of the cylinder highlighted in D, and panels F through N show all the parts within, from different types of axons and dendrites to pieces of glial cells. <image:caption>A Pair of Neurons that Form Multiple Synapses with Each Other. In blue is an axon and in green a dendrite. The five orange dendritic spines show the multiple sites at which this axon and dendrite form synapses. The white arrows point to two axonal varicosities that synapse with other neurons’ dendrites (now shown). This is one of the more extreme examples in the dataset, highlighting how certain pairs of neurons preferentially form synaptic contacts with each other over other neurons—making many more synapses than would be expected if connectivity were based on axon and dendrite proximity alone. <image:title>News Blog - Brain Cells that Differ in Males and Females</image:title>
<image:caption>The role of sex in neural responses to odor. Each red dot represents a deep brain (medial amygdala) neuron in a female mouse, and each blue dot an analogous deep brain neuron in a male mouse. The corners of the triangles represent the different odor cues tested (predator urine, male mouse urine, and female mouse urine). The position of each dot reveals the cell’s firing pattern. A dot in the center represents a neuron that is often “turned on” by all three stimuli, whereas a dot in one corner of the triangle represents a neuron that is usually “turned on” specifically by that stimulus. Clearly, neurons from adult females respond strongly to male odor cues and neurons from adult males respond more strongly to female odor cues. Juvenile mice, on the other hand, lack this sex-based difference. (Courtesy of Dulac Lab)</image:caption>

<image:title>News Blog - New theory on how inhibitory brain activity “turns on” critical periods</image:title>
<image:caption>Probing how a rise in inhibition might trigger critical periods The model in this study zooms in on a single pyramidal neuron in visual cortex, receiving excitatory inputs from both the contralateral (opposite side) and ipsilateral (same side) eyes. The “y” represents the firing rate, or output of this neuron, and “m” is the combined strength of inhibitory inputs from neighboring cortical neurons. The hypothesis is that maturation of inhibition “turns” on the critical period for ocular dominance plasticity. The authors of this study propose that as inhibition matures, it increases the influence of visually-evoked, as opposed to spontaneous, neural activity >></image:caption>

Actin is shown in green and spectrin (ẞII isoform, labeled at its C-terminus) in purple.(Right) Model for the periodic actin-spectrin structure. Actin rings, composed of short actin filaments (green) capped by the adducin protein (blue), are wrapped around the circumference of the axon and separated by spectrin tetramers (purple) at 180-190 nanometer intervals.
