Transmission of Stress Signals:
Neurodevelopmental programming through the microbiome and germ cell exosomes

Tracy Bale, PhD

Professor of Neuroscience, University of Pennsylvania

Neurodevelopmental disorders including autism and schizophrenia are highly associated with parental factors, including lifetime stress experience. Using mouse models of maternal or paternal stress exposure, we have focused on identifying novel mechanisms of transmission whereby the offspring brain is reprogrammed -- including via the maternal vaginal microbiome and paternal epididymal exosomes.
